YOUNGSTOWN - Thrive Mahoning Valley's Transportation Equity Program has expanded into a social enterprise bike shop, offering transportation assistance for people all across the Valley.

Pedal Forward Bike Shop, located at 854 Wilson Avenue in Youngstown, offers new bikes, used bikes and supplies, plus repair and maintenance services.

The social enterprise label for a business comes from its mission, which focuses on social or environmental impact rather than making profits. Therefore, funds given to the Pedal Forward Bike Shop will go directly towards supporting transportation equity in the Valley.

The Executive Director of Thrive Mahoning Valley, Christopher Colon, said the idea for the program and bike shop all started when a college student expressed the need for a bicycle so they could travel around campus with an instrument.

"The lightbulb kind of went off. We asked how many other members of our community could use a bike for free. Through donations, through police departments giving us their leftover stock of bicycles, through bike drives, we've been able to collect quite a few bicycles," said Colon.

Since 2023, the program has provided over 170 bicycles to those in need. In 2026, leadership of the organization said they hope to provide 120 bicycles.

The organization has seen an increase in need from residents of lower income, those who are unhoused, or new to the community.

"These efforts are only possible because of the generosity of local residents, donors and partners who believe that transportation should never be a barrier to opportunity," said Colon.

Residents can apply for the organization's free bike program on Thrive Mahoning Valley's website. Along with the bicycle, recipients will get a helmet, lock, bell, lights and an informational guide on bike laws and safety.
