Youngstown teacher accused of stealing school funds pleads guilty

YOUNGSTOWN - A Youngstown City School teacher who was accused of stealing school funds entered a guilty plea on Thursday.
Traci Cain, an East High School science teacher, pleaded guilty to one felony count of theft.
Cain must participate in a theft diversion program, which allows individuals to complete specific requirements to avoid a formal criminal conviction. Additionally, Cain owes $8,500 in restitution.
The charge stems from theft that occurred between July of 2017 and March of 2025 at East High School when money for a senior class trip went missing.
Initially, Cain was placed on leave by the district, but eventually did return to teaching under the condition that she could no longer handle students' funds.
If Cain completes the program and pays the restitution amount, no criminal action will be made against her.
A spokesperson from the Youngstown City School District (YCSD) told 21 News that the district is aware of Cain's plea and participation in a theft diversion program, alongside stating that the district anticipates receiving $8,500 restitution.
The full statement reads as follows:
"During the criminal investigation process, YCSD has deferred any administrative actions against Ms. Cain in order to allow the criminal process to run its course. Now that the criminal matter has concluded with a guilty plea to felony theft, the YCSD will also conclude its administrative processes regarding Ms. Cain. As this is an on-going personnel matter, the YCSD will not further comment at this time, but will follow its Board policies and any other regulatory requirements."
