Mahoning Co. Commissioners approve grant to reduce lead in pipes, rehab homes

The Mahoning County Commissioners accepted a $7,000,000 grant that will help remove lead from pipes and rehabilitate homes in the Valley.
The award comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mahoning County Commissioners approved an up to seven-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti says they will use as much of the seven million as they need to get the work done.
"You have areas within Mahoning County that have issues with lead," Rimedio-Righetti said. "That money is used to help that chip program clean up the lead, the mold in those homes."
The money will go toward reducing lead in pipes and rehabbing homes across the county.
Rimedio-Righetti credits Lead Hazard Control Department Head Phillip Puryear with securing the grant funding, something she says will help a lot of people in Mahoning County.
Some of those homes in need of repair are in Youngstown, Struthers and Campbell.
