Mahoning Valley - Local non-profits Never Muzzled and Legacy Dog Rescue have partnered to make sure every fire station in Mahoning and Trumbull counties have pet oxygen masks.

A firefighter having a pet oxygen mask available when fighting a house fire with pets inside the home can be difference between life and death.

"We've actually applied these to the animals, and you honestly see a noticeable improvement. They seem to rebound a lot faster and it helps them get the oxygen they need back into their blood and hopefully start eliminating some of the bad byproducts of the combustion process that they've inhaled," said Austintown Fire Battalion Chief, Fred Marcum.

The goal is to purchase 150 pet oxygen mask kits and distribute them to fire departments in Trumbull and Mahoning counties. Each kit cost $125 dollars, so they are requesting the communities help.

"You can sponsor a mask kit for your local department. We also have a way that you can do it as an in memory of a pet or a family member, with an engraved tag on the mask," said Linda Liguori, President of Never Muzzled.

They are also accepting gift cards and raffle baskets for the official in person fundraiser at Quaker Steak & Lube in Austintown on June 27, 2026.
