Howland High School recognizes students that joined military after graduation

Students and their families were invited to Howland High School to participate in a signing ceremony, recognizing students who have chosen to join the U.S. military after high school.
"We wanted to recognize our students that are making a commitment to enlist. So, when we go through the options and career options and pathways for students, we always talk about one of the three 'E's," said Principal Joe Simko of Howland High School.
Those three options are employment, enrolling in a post-secondary program or enlisting.
The Tuesday ceremony, called "Military Signing Day", recognized two students: Calvin Croff and Blake Flowers.
Croff, according to a news release outlining the event, enlisted in the U.S. Army with the assistance of recruiter Sergeant First Class Boyle. He will go on to attend basic combat training before beginning service as a 13U Field Artillery Recruit.
Flowers has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserve with help from recruiter Sergeant Martinez.
Principal Simko tells 21 News that the school is very proud of being known as a "Purple Star" school through the State of Ohio, which they were awarded in 2025.
"It shows that you're a school that supports military families and students of military families and promotes military pathways for your kids, and options for your students," said Simko.
More information on "Purple Star" school designations, how to apply and award cycles can be found on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce's website page here.
After the ceremony, those in attendance were invited to a special lunch provided by Sweet Melissa's Good Eats.
