WATCH: Black bear spotted in driveway of Lordstown home
A black bear was spotted in the driveway of a Lordstown home on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
A video of the incident was shared with 21 News by a viewer who captured the incident on a security camera, and can be watched in the media player above.
The home is located in Lordstown along Rustic Run.
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) website, black bears are considered to be endangered in the state. These bears can range in size from 100 to 400 pounds, be five to six feet long and stand an average of three feet tall at the shoulder.
The ODNR website also shares tips on how to avoid potential conflict between black bears and humans.
Residents can bear-proof their backyard by doing the following:
- Removing feeders, including hummingbird and suet feeders
- Store garbage in a garage or secure containers
- Keep pet foods inside the home, especially at night
- Place electric fencing around any beehives
- For those with berry bushes, fruit is encouraged to be picked as soon as possible
If conflicts continue, it is encouraged that you contact your county wildlife officer or call 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543).
While black bears typically fear humans, encounters can still be possible.
The first thing to remember when you spot a black bear is to stay calm. If the bear does not notice your presence, it is encouraged that you back away slowly.
An acronym, "AWARE", is shared on the ODNR website for those who encounter a black bear:
- Act calm and do not run
- Warn the bear that you are near and talk in a firm, calm voice
- Allow space between you and the bear by backing away slowly, ensuring that you're not making the bear feel threatened or trapped
- Raise your hands above your head to appear larger if the bear approaches, clapping your hands or shouting to scare the bear away
- Exit the area
