Bill on resource officers at non-public schools moving to Ohio Senate floor

A bill focused on allowing non-public schools to bring on a school resource officer (SRO) has passed the Ohio Senate's Education Committee, according to a news release from State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield).
Senate Bill 318, a bill that would amend the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) to specify that police departments of "non-home-rule communities" could provide SROs to non-public schools.
A "non-home-rule community" means that powers are limited and bound by the ORC.
Senator Cutrona introduced the bill to the Senate in November 2025. It passed the Education Committee on March 11, 2026, with a unanimous vote of six yeas.
The bill will now be sent to the Senate floor to be fully considered.
"In this day and age, the safety of students at all schools should be the focus of every community," said Senator Cutrona.
Cutrona continued," Providing every school with the resources necessary to protect students will help deter wrongdoing and bolster security. I'm proud to see this pass favorably out of committee and look forward to seeing this legislation passed by the Senate."
