Trees damage two homes after weekend storms in Warren and Howland
TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - Strong storms over the weekend caused two scary situations when trees fell on houses in two separate areas. In Howland, a family was asleep when it happened.
“The whole roof is just crushed in, insulations all over the place, the walls collapsed on this side, the ceiling is all caved in,” Lee Phillips, the Howland homeowner said.
Phillips fired up the chainsaw himself to start cleaning up the branches that came crashing down onto his house at four in the morning. His son's room has the most damage. He said luckily just ten minutes before the tree toppled his son got out of bed and decided to sleep on the couch in the living room, possibly saving his life.
“This could have been a lot worse. I count my blessing that my family is okay,” Phillips said.
It was a similar scene in Warren when a vacant house was crushed as well. The owner, John Thurston, lives next door.
“I was watching TV late night and all the sudden I heard like a sonic boom,” Thurston said. “I knew one day it would probably fall down because those trees over there seem like they were pretty rotten and hollow and they were pretty old.”
Thurston doesn't want to salvage the house while Phillips said it'll be about three days until the tree is completely removed. Both men are just happy to get out unscathed and are pushing through what comes next.
“Just tear it down and get it out of here. I'll make a garden out of it,” Thurston said.
“Life goes sideways and you really have to make the best of it…just hug your loved ones a little bit tighter,” Phillips said.
