Salem City Schools Superintendent Sean Kirkland dies after battle with cancer, district announces
SALEM - Salem City Schools Superintendent Sean Kirkland died after a battle with cancer, the school district announced via Facebook Monday afternoon.
"Sean was not only the leader of our school district, he was a mentor, a friend, a coach, and one of the most passionate champions this community had ever known," said Schools Board President Brittany Maniscalco at the board meeting Monday night.
Kirkland was appointed as superintendent in 2019.
He previously served as principal of Salem Senior High School, as well as a coach for the football and baseball teams.
Kirkland graduated from Salem Senior High in 1986.
"The lessons I learned from you, not only about education, but about leadership, compassion, resiliency, continue to stick with me every day," said Salem Senior High School Principal Todd McLaughlin.
Under Kirkland's leadership, the district began construction on a new K-8 building, which is scheduled to be completed before the 2017-2028 school year.
"I love you, and I'm gonna miss you," said Treasurer Michael Douglas.
The Salem City Schools Board hopes to meet Wednesday to discuss plans for an appointment of an interim superintendent.
