Sparkle Market on Western Reserve Rd. closing permanently, owner blames road construction
BOARDMAN - Another Sparkle Market in the Mahoning Valley is set to close its doors in the coming days.
Nikky Furrie, who co-owns the Sparkle Market on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township with Vince Furrie, confirmed with 21 News that the Western Reserve Road location will be closing its doors after March 22.
The property was purchased in 2003, and the store and plaza were built in 2005. Furrie called the closure a "last resort option" and said it is due in part to "an extended period of significant road construction and traffic disruptions" in the area that made it difficult for customers to reach the store.
Furrie tells 21 News that following the first quarter of construction, the store lost $1.3 million in expected revenue, and that the prolonged road closure, as well as flooding, added to the store's financial difficulties.
21 News has reached out to Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti, who oversaw the construction project on Western Reserve Road, for comment, and we're waiting to hear back.
Since January 2025, four other Sparkle Markets have already closed in Niles, Salem, Warren and Youngstown. Customers going in and out of the store Tuesday afternoon told 21 News they were disappointed to see another locally owned business shut down.
"It's just another sad story that another store in our area is closing," said Reba Soldressen. "I do find comfort in coming to these stores like this. I find what I need, and the people are really nice. ... I'm sure with this area, it's gonna hurt them, because there's nothing around here, so you're gonna have to go to [State Route] 224."
Following the closure, some employees may be transferred to Sparkle Market's Cornersburg or Columbiana locations. Furrie tells 21 News those two locations will be ownership's top priority following the Western Reserve store's closure.
Hometown Pharmacies is looking for an alternative plan for its location inside the store, according to Ron McDermott, senior vice president of pharmacy operations for the company. McDermott said in a video interview with 21 News that in the immediate future, the drive-through of the pharmacy will continue to operate.
"We are working with the store to get a pathway from the main entrance over to the pharmacy as well. ... [We] want to let our patients, our valued customers, know that we're going to be there for them and we're not going anywhere," McDermott said.
In the long term, McDermott told 21 News Hometown Pharmacies is looking at multiple options, including moving into the Lemon Tree location next door, finding another place nearby or remaining in its current location.
Here is the statement released by the Furries:
Sparkle Market is announcing it will close its Western Reserve store after nearly 20 years of serving the community. The store will remain open through March 22, 2026, after which operations at the location will cease.
The decision follows an extended period of significant road construction and traffic disruptions in the surrounding area that have made it increasingly difficult for customers to reach the store. Despite efforts to continue operating through these challenges, the location has not been able to sustain the level of business necessary to remain open.
The decision is not a reflection of the store's employees, as our team at this location has been outstanding. Their dedication to our customers and the community has meant everything to us, and we are deeply grateful for the work they've done every day.
We would also like to express our appreciation to our customers and neighbors who have supported the store over the years. We are thankful to everyone in the community who chose to shop with us and made this store part of their daily lives. Sparkle Market's Cornersburg and Columbiana locations will remain open and continue serving their communities.
