Lakeview Local Schools lays off three employees

CORTLAND - The Lakeview Local School District in Cortland has laid off three employees.
Superintendent Ashley Handrych tells 21 News that two teachers and one classified employee have been laid off, effective at the end of the 2025-26 school year.
Handrych said that Lakeview, like many other school districts in Ohio, is experiencing rising costs and a stalemate in revenue. A problem that will only worsen with the recently passed changes to Ohio's property tax laws.
"We have to be responsible, and we have to remain sustainable over time," Handrych said.
Looking ahead, Handrych said the district is waiting to see what Trumbull County commissioners decide in reference to homestead exemption and earner occupancy expansion credits.
Depending on what commissioners decide, future cuts could be made if the State of Ohio does not backfill that funding. The severity of any potential future cuts is unknown at this time.
Lakeview Treasurer Terry Armstrong previously told 21 News in February that Lakeview spends 30% less per student than the average Ohio school district. Armstrong said that increased tax cuts by commissioners could cost the district about $400,000 per year.
