Ohio Turnpike dicusses new strategy to combat toll evasion

BEREA, Ohio - The Ohio Turnpike is cooking up a new strategy to get drivers with outstanding toll debt to pay their tolls.
A spokesperson for the Ohio Turnpike tells 21 News the Turnpike already has some methods in place to collect unpaid toll debts, such as sending outstanding debts to collections after three notices of an unpaid invoice or freezing license and registration renewals for those with unpaid toll debt.
However, this new strategy will make drivers' toll evasion much more public.
The spokesperson tells 21 News that a lot of commercial truck drivers without E-ZPass are using creative methods to obscure their license plates to bypass the Turnpike's cameras and avoid getting an invoice in the mail.
These methods include using grease to obscure the license plate information or flipping the plate upside down.
The latest strategy involves compiling a list of commercial trucking companies that owe the largest amount in tolls and publicizing that list for anyone to see. This will be done by providing the list to news media outlets, as well as posting the list on the Turnpike's website.
The spokesperson says there is no timeframe for when this list will go live, but he does say it is expected to go out in the "near future."
The Turnpike is reminding drivers that obscuring plate information and evading tolls are illegal and could result in punishment.
The spokesperson added that while most drivers, both commercial and passenger, are paying their tolls accordingly, the ones who don't make it unfair for the drivers who do pay, because the Turnpike relies on the revenue generated from tolls to upkeep the roads and make improvements to them.
