YOUNGSTOWN - The demolition of the former Eastern Gateway Community College parking garage is slated to begin in September.

Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) Director of Engineering and Construction Andy Partika tells 21 News that WRPA is working to finish up demolition plans and is scheduled to start bidding for a contractor in June.

Partika says he hopes to have a contractor in place by July.

From there, demolition of the parking garage is planned to start in September. Partika tells 21 News he wants to wait until major downtown Youngstown events like the Greater Youngstown Italian Festival and the Panerathon pass before starting the work.

Once work starts, Partika says his goal is for the demolition to last three to four months.

Once demolition is completed, the goal is to construct a new building that could potentially house several Mahoning County offices that are currently located in the Oak Hill Renaissance building.
