Boardman man accused of intentionally crashing vehicle with child inside

BOARDMAN - A Boardman man is facing several charges after police say he intentionally crashed a car with a child inside.
According to a police report, the crash happened on Wednesday, March 18, at the intersection of South Avenue and Simon Road in Boardman.
When police got to the scene, they spoke with a woman who said a man, later identified as 39-year-old Cornell Barnes, fled on foot from the crash. The woman told police the crash may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Police then spoke with another woman who was in the car with Barnes. This woman told police she and Barnes share a child and that their child was in the car at the time of the crash.
The woman told police that she and Barnes were arguing about the child when Barnes eventually told her to stop talking and listen to him and threatened to "pull the wheel" and "hurt [them] all" if she didn't stop talking.
From there, police say Barnes, who was in the passenger seat, pulled the steering wheel into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, resulting in the child getting hurt and sustaining a small cut above his eye.
The driver of the other vehicle corroborated this story, saying the vehicle Barnes was in "swerved suddenly" just before hitting her vehicle.
Both the woman in the car with Barnes and the woman in the other car told police they wanted to press charges. Police later found and arrested Barnes near his apartment on South Avenue.
Police say Barnes initially denied being in the car at all, before allegedly admitting that he was in the car, but blamed the crash on the woman, saying they were "just having a conversation" and that she may have been distracted due to the argument. Police say Barnes also denied pulling the steering wheel.
Court records show he is charged with three counts of felonious assault, as well as two first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence counts, two fourth-degree misdemeanor domestic violence counts and one first-degree misdemeanor count of endangering children.
Barnes was arraigned on Thursday, March 19, where his bond was set at $100,000. If he posts bond, Barnes is ordered not to have any contact with the victims.
Barnes is due back in court on Tuesday, March 24.
