Men's health initiative comes to Youngstown

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A men's health initiative that's been highly successful in Columbus is coming to Youngstown for the first time.

At a meeting on Thursday, plans were announced for the first African-American Male Wellness Walk to be held in Youngstown on August 31.

The event will focus on raising awareness about health and wellness in the urban community and encouraging more African-American men to see a doctor.

"What we've seen, particularly in Columbus, we've seen an increase in the number of African American men who go to the doctor," says John Gregory of the National Center for Urban Solutions.

Studies have shown that black men are dying at higher rates from preventable diseases than any other ethnic group. The Wellness Walk will also provide health screenings.
