WARREN, Ohio - The Community Concerned Citizens held their 12th annual "Juneteenth" celebration at Perkins Park Saturday.
Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.
The celebration activities included barbecuing, baseball and prayer services as a way of celebrating freedom.
Juneteenth gets its name because Union soldiers went to Texas on June 18 and 19 in 1865 to proclaim the Civil War had ended and to enforce the executive order ending slavery.
The soldiers made their trek more than two years after President Lincoln's famous "emancipation proclamation."
Black Independence Day is marked as June 19, 1865.
