Baseball field in Austintown dedicated in memory of major league umpire Wally Bell

Posted: Updated:

A ribbon cutting ceremony for a baseball field was held Saturday at Austintown Township Park in memory and in honor of Major League Baseball umpire Wally Bell who died of a heart attack in October of 2013.

Family, friends, Austintown Township trustees, and other dignitaries dedicated the field which has new dug outs, new bleachers, landscaping and more.

Those who knew Wally Bell say the major league umpire was always there to offer help to others in the community. “That was something that meant a lot to Wally. To go into those hospitals and make the children smile and laugh. That was what Wally was all about. He loved life and he had a good time at it,” said Todd Shaffer, Austintown Township park supervisor.

“He loved baseball. He was passionate about it, not quite as passionate about it as he was his kids, but he loved this sport and he would be so honored to know there was a baseball field being dedicated to him in Austintown,” said Bell’s sister Beckie Hulings.

Bell’s children and sister say they hope when kids play at the field they will feel the same passion for baseball as Wally did.
