Task Force asks public to help solve murder of Youngstown teen

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

Authorities are making a public plea for information leading to whoever shot and killed a Youngstown teenager.

The Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force posted on its website a request for people to come forward if they can help identify those present, and the person or persons responsible for the shooting death of Shawn Cortez.

Authorities say that the conflict that led up to the shooting of the seventeen year old involved two groups.

Witnesses say about 25 to 35 people gathered on Winona Drive before several rounds of gunfire were exchanged shortly before 6:00 p.m. Sunday

Cortez was shot in the chest. He later died at the hospital.

Police have been reviewing cell phone video captured by witnesses and interviewing people who were at the scene of the shooting.

Detectives have not said if they have any suspects or persons of interest in the case.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 330-333-1TIP (1847)
