More than a dozen dogs were killed in an overnight fire in New Castle.

Firefighters say they responded to a house fire on the 300 block of Boyles Avenue just before midnight. They say two people and multiple pets were trapped inside the home.

The homeowners were able to escape, but 15 dogs and several birds died in the fire.

Officials say the fire started in the garage and spread to the back of the house. They say the house is not a total loss, but it is unlivable. The Red Cross has been called to assist the family.

There is no word on what caused the fire or the cost of damage.
