New plan for former YDC campus in Mahoning County

Posted: Updated:
MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio -

Thursday's Mahoning County Commissioners meeting included a presentation about a plan to give new life to the former Youngstown Developmental Center.

The former YDC Campus on County Line Road could become a centralized location for non-profit agencies that provide services to various age groups.

The head of  ALTA Behavioral Healthcare wants to begin by using the facility to provide fresh, nutritional meals to children in Head Start.

"The primary group initially will be feeding all the ALTA Head Start kids; 845 kids a day breakfast, a hot lunch and snack in the afternoon,"  said Joe Shorokey, CEO of ALTA.

Currently, ALTA is provided bulk meals delivered from Cleveland, but they offer little choice or variety and don't designate between seniors or children.

"So whatever one age group will eat the other age group will eat the same items. So there are very, very few choices that we have," said Lori Spellmar, Nutrition Director for  ALTA Head Start.

Shorokey said they would serve about 300,000 meals a year to start, but the program could be expanded to include clients of other agencies.

"We would make the meals fresh daily at the facility and deliver them to other facilities in bulk and they would divide it up for their constituents," Shorokey said.

Beside healthy meals, the program would provide job skill training for people receiving agency services.

"We're looking to provide employment training for people who are in recovery from mental health systems, from the drug and alcohol system, even from the developmental disabilities who may benefit from a placement like this," Shorokey said.

The hope is if all the pieces come together the first part of the program could be up and running by the end of next year or early 2020.
