A trip to the vet turned into an emergency call for first responders in Austintown.

According to police, a sergeant was called out Thursday for an emergency at the Austintown Veterinary Clinic.

Police say a Doberman Pinscher named Trooper was in for surgery and had been given anesthesia.

An employee at the Veterinary Clinic tells 21 News that Trooper was in for a standard procedure to be neutered and had an "adverse reaction".

At that point, officials say Trooper had a "severe reaction to the medication and started to suffer an opioid emergency".

The Austintown Police Sergeant gave Trooper Narcan which reversed the emergency.

Narcan, the common name for naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, is used to treat those who are believed to be going through an opioid overdose.

The Veterinary Clinic says they do not typically keep Narcan stocked, however, an employee says they plan to in the future.

Police say Trooper is now at home recovering with his family.
