Riverview Apartments demolition moving forward, process met with controversy

It's only a matter of time before Riverview Apartments in Warren are torn down and so far, 60 percent of those residents have found new places to go.
"Right now we are moving in a good place with our relocation efforts," said Warren First Ward Councilman Todd Johnson.
Councilman Johnson even going as far to say they're ahead of schedule, with residents making use of housing choice vouchers anywhere they'd like.
"This effort at tearing down a building that does not serve it's purpose anymore will actually help to spur development and growth," said Johnson. "Our residents seem to be pleased with the choices that they have through the housing vouchers," he said.
That idea was met with some controversy though as Councilman at Large and mayoral candidate Ken MacPherson says he's received complaints from people about the new accommodations lacking in areas of crime and cleanliness. Those are also some of the same issues that were faced at the Riverview Apartments.
"What led to the deplorable conditions that we had there and what makes us think that if we don't change our processes and change the details, that we're not just going to have the same problem when we move people to new locations," Councilman MacPherson said.
Councilman Johnson tells 21 News he hadn't heard any of these complaints from his constituents and is working with the Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority to take care of their residents.
"There are always issues in public housing and they are constantly being addressed as much as they can be kept up with," Johnson said.
The timeline to relocate all the residents from Riverview Apartments is mid-summer.
