The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has learned about a text messaging scam where someone is pretending to be a toll agencies requesting payment for "unpaid funds."

Called "smishing," scammers will randomly target phone numbers and ask for money for any unpaid tolls or toll violations, directing them to a website.

The Ohio Turnpike doesn't request payments from its E-Z Pass customers and collection of unpaid tolls or violations don't occur by text.

Those contacted by a number requesting payment this way should do the following:

  • Contact the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center here.
  • Include the phone number from where the text came from and list the website listed within the text.
  • Check your account using the toll service's real website.
  • Call the Ohio Turnpike's E-Z Pass customer service center at (440) 971-2222
  • Delete any smishing texts
