The City of Hermitage will receive $392,000 in federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside funds for a “Safe Routes to Schools” project, which will install sidewalks on Route 18 in the city.

The project will provide a walkway for pedestrians between the Hermitage School District campus and the Shenango Valley YMCA complex through the installation of 1,100 feet of sidewalk along Route 18 from the intersection of Highland Road to the existing sidewalk north of the YMCA property.

"Adding this vital new sidewalk access is going to safely increase opportunities for our school kids to participate in the many activities found at the Shenango Valley YMCA. These include indoor and outdoor youth recreation programs, indoor basketball, fitness/strength training, outdoor soccer, baseball, and football,” Brooks said. “This project will provide a critical component to ensure a safe connection for not only students, but also adults that will use the pathway to this very popular facility.”

Funding for the project is being provided through the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside program.
