Students and faculty at Croton Pre-Kindergarten were evacuated this afternoon following bomb concerns.

It stemmed from an investigation into a fraud case that involved the transfer of money in order to get a larger amount of funds, according to a post on the New Castle Police Department Facebook page.

Officials say the fraud scam had been happening over several months at multiple times. Detectives went to the victim's home near the Croton administrative and elementary school were they were told a safe was sent to the victim by the suspects involved.

"The belief is that the actor(s) wanted the victim to believe that their significant amount of funds were in this safe but if anyone tampered or tried to open the safe without the correct combination, the safe would explode," the post reads.

Following a positive indication from explosive detecting K-9, a bomb squad from Allegheny County came to check on the safe.

Due to the proximity of the house the safe was in, it was decided that Croton be evacuated and classes cancelled today.

Later, the safe was detonated at nearby field, no explosives were found in the safe when it was opened.

The investigation is still ongoing.
