Youngstown, Ohio - It is a harsh reality that too often thousands of people across Ohio, as well as here in the Valley, have nothing to eat. To help change that, Charter One Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank are teaming up.

Metal cans that contain nothing will be the focus of the campaign. The goal is to have individuals, businesses, and organizations fill the cans with donations to help fight hunger.

Mike Iberis, Executive Director of Second Harvest says a growing number of those in need of emergency food assistance are children.

"It's incredible to think that 49% of the children in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties live in poverty and are eligible for free and reduced lunch and that's a huge number," Iberis said.

This year alone the food bank estimates it will need nine million pounds of food to meet the needs of families that otherwise would have nothing.

The need is growing because it's no longer just the homeless. Charles Berber of The Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks, said the faces of hunger have changed.

"But its actually friends and neighbors, individuals who are right within your community that are actually going hungry everyday," Berber said.

The Charter One Foundation provided the starting gift of $50,000 to the Nothing Campaign, which will run through September.
