Craig Beach police chief fired, legal challenge being pursued
CRAIG BEACH, Ohio - Craig Beach City Council has voted to fire Police Chief Joe Borosky, but Borosky and his attorney are challenging the decision questioning if the vote was legal.
Chief Borosky was caught on dash cam video forcefully pulling a 59-year-old woman out of her car after pulling her over on a traffic stop for going left of center.
The woman is visibly upset and struggling with the chief as he tries to handcuff her.
Borosky has been on administrative leave for months after a number of complaints were made against him, but it's this case in particular that was the focus of a special hearing by Craig Beach City Council Wednesday night.
Craig Beach City Council member Cynthia Hale said, "The concerns that were brought to us last night (Wednesday) on those charges were that excessive force was used to remove Mrs. Poling from her car. When you watch the video, there is clear evidence in my opinion that there was excessive force used. There have been other complaints, but what we really dealt with last night was about that issue."
Only five of the six council members were present at the meeting, but there was enough for a quorum. Council members voted 3 to 2 to fire the police chief for use of excessive force.
"We did have a vote for the charges against Mr. Borosky. Of that vote, his attorney questioned the legality, if it would hold, because we were missing a council member and the way that we left that meeting was the decision was made to remove him from office and his attorney was going to appeal that," Hale said.
Hale says the decision was made in the best interest of the community.
"Of course there's a concern with Craig Beach. We do not want people who are our visitors or our residents to feel like they are harassed in any way or that they're being treated unfairly," Hale said.
Borosky posted a comment on social media the day before the vote saying, "Have fun playing chief now, it's not going to last forever. So wear your monkey suit and hat because things will be changing when I come back."
Borosky's attorney was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
