Warren jewelry store holding event to raise money for the American Heart Association

WARREN, Ohio - The folks at Thom Duma Fine Jewelers in Warren are inviting the public to shop for a purpose on Tuesday.
It's hard to envision the long journey Alexa Kucher has already been on as she wheels herself through the showroom at Thom Duma's. At just six-years-old, Alexa has already undergone three major heart surgeries and someday will most likely need a heart transplant.
"It has just been a really long road and she is not done yet. We still have a ways to go. But if it wasn't for all of the research and all of the funding for the research; the things that they've done for her, those didn't exist 35 years or more ago and some not even 20 years ago. So without all of that we might not even have her here today." said Alexa's mom Jennifer Kucher.
The research that Jennifer is talking about is conducted by the American Heart Association and is made possible through donations to the organization. Donations that Thom Duma, the owner of Thom Duma Fine Jewelers, hopes to collect at an event he is hosting Tuesday featuring the David Yurman jewelry line.
"We live in a world where sometimes bad things happen to good people. So this way we can touch a family that is being challenged and we can help through our giving and so that is the purpose of the event," Duma said.
The event will run from 9:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23rd.. The David Yurman foundation will donate 5% of the day's proceeds to the American Heart Association and Thom Duma has agreed to match that.
"Pediatric cardiology is an issue in all areas, specifically here in the Mahoning Valley. It starts with congenital heart defects where children are born with a heart abnormality, which may need medicine or surgery and that is where a lot of the research money helps especially with the American Heart Association funding research here in Ohio," said Dr. Peter Vande Kappelle, American Heart Association President.
