Thaw brings water damage to Austintown Fitch High School

AUSTINTOWN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Rising temperatures in the Valley are revealing damage to water pipes caused by recent frigid temperatures.
One example could be seen at Fitch High School in Austintown Township where water caused some ceiling tiles to cave-in over a hallway.
School facilities manager Malvern Culp told 21 News that the damage was caused by a frozen radiator that began to leak as the ice started melting.
Culp says the damage is not as extensive as it appears, noting that only a few ceiling tiles were involved. School superintendent Vince Colaluca says it is the seventh time leaks have caused ceiling damage since he became superintendent.
Crews from the Youngstown Water Department have been busy the past couple of days responding to broken water lines.
21 News found one crew working Thursday morning along South Avenue where a pipe had burst, sending freezing water onto the road.
Water department officials say they were working on two other leaks at the same time. A spokesperson for the department says workers had repaired about ten leaks over the previous two days.
He said that customers only lose water service while the line is being repaired.
