CLEVELAND (AP) - Coast Guard officials are warning boaters on the Great Lakes of falling water temperatures despite continuing warm weather.

Safety officials with the U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District in Cleveland say water temperatures in Lake Erie are down to 60 degrees Fahrenheit after water temperatures in the summer approached 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The recreational boating safety specialist for the Coast Guard Ninth District says warm air temperatures can create a false sense of security for boaters. Specialist Mike Baron says boaters should always dress for the water temperature rather than the air temperature since cool water can drain body heat up to 25 times faster than cool air.

Officials also warn that Great Lakes weather is unpredictable and dangerous during seasonal transitions.
