CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Red Cross is calling for blood and platelet donations following the 4th of July week.

According to the release, the American Red Cross is facing a blood shortage, causing the emergency call.

The organization is asking for eligible individuals of all blood types to donate.

Businesses and groups organized nearly 450 fewer blood drives over the last week because of the holiday.

The smaller amount of blood drives led to almost 17,000 fewer donations than needed.

The organization says they have less than a three day supply of most blood types and less than a two day supply of type O blood.

A five-day supply is an amount the organization desires.
