Youngstown-based national additive manufacturing and 3-D printing institute, America Makes, is teaming up with the National Football League for the NFL Helmet Challenge.

Together, along with the NFL Biomechanics Consulting and Research LLC, they will host a symposium in Youngstown at the DeYor Performing Arts Center on November 13 through the 15.

The NFL Helmet Challenge is a $3 million funded challenge to help increase the understanding of football biomechanics and create opportunities for small businesses and innovators to develop safer equipment.

The symposium will include information on the current state of helmets and concussions in the NFL.

Available resources, additional challenge info, and networking will also be discussed at the symposium.

Senior level NFL reps and helmet manufacturers will be in attendance.

A travel grant is available for university students and faculty wishing to attend the symposium.

The deadline to register for the symposium is Oct. 2, and the proposal deadline to apply for a grant to fund helmet prototypes is Jan. 23, 2020.

Winners of the grant are expected to be announced March 2020.

Final helmet prototype submissions are due in April 2021 and the final winner will be chosen in May 2021.
