CANFIELD, Ohio - A new screening system for visitors is coming to the Canfield School District to improve security.

It's called the Raptor system. The system will screen every visitor, contractor and volunteer instantly against up-to-date U.S. sex offender databases in all 50 states, according to the district. The system will also check visitors against school or district databases, which can include information about custody alerts or banned visitors. Raptor will immediately alert school officials if a visitor is identified as a risk.

The money for the system comes from a $73,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Justice.

"The Canfield Police Department was instrumental in securing the funding, which allows us to have a Raptor in each building. This is one more layer of protection for our students and staff," Canfield Superintendent Joe Knoll said.

Money from the grant will also go towards improving police radio communication within the Canfield high school and the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

The district said it's working with the police department and hopes to have everything in place beginning in 2021.
