Boil alert lifted for seven Lawrence County communities

After more than three days, a boil alert has been lifted for the New Castle area, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Pennsylvania American Water customers in portions of the City of New Castle, South New Castle Borough, Union Township, Shenango Township, Hickory Township, Neshannock Township and Mahoning Township no longer need to boil their water before use or take any additional precautions.
Acceptable test results were obtained from samples collected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The DEP required two consecutive days of "clean" test results until they could lift the alert.
The boil alert was issued back on Sunday because of a loss in positive water pressure at water storage tanks in Union Township and Neshannock Township following a 12-inch water main break.
The break happened around 2 p.m. and left about 40,000 people with low pressure or no water at all.
In response to the break, the Pennsylvania American Water Company gave out water bottles to the community.
At least 75 cars lined up Sunday night at the Lawrence Village Plaza and received up to two cases of water apiece.
The broken main was repaired, and tank levels have returned to normal.
