Pennsylvania State Police have identified both the victim and suspect killed after an altercation led to a police-involved shooting in New Wilmington. 

Police identified the assault victim who died as 24-year-old Chyna Cardena from Springdale, Arkansas.

New Wilmington police officers responded to a 911 call at a home on S. New Castle Street at 11:08 a.m. Thursday. 

The police officers found a man assaulting the 24-year-old Hispanic transgender woman with a "blunt instrument" in the home's backyard. 

Police told the suspect to stop assaulting Cardena, and he refused. 

New Wilmington police then fired at the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Juan Carter Hernandez of Campbell, who died on the scene. 

Cardena was taken to Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she died of her injuries. 

The case is still under investigation, and the name of the officer involved has not yet been released.
