Spring is here and with it comes allergy season and weeds popping up in yards and farms around the area.

One weed in particular - dandelions - are making a comeback in Ohio after thinning out over the last few decades.

The dandelion resurgence has been occurring over the last couple of years according to Mark Loux, a weed specialist with The Ohio State University.

Loux says the weed can grow deep roots and is adaptable to herbicides, making it tough to get rid of them.

While dandelions and weeds are an annoyance to many casual gardeners, they can affect profits and supply for farmers.

The plant will compete with crops the farmer plants for water, nutrients and sunlight, causing some plants to be affected.

Loux says clearing dandelions from a field usually requires three weed killer applications, one each during the spring, summer and fall seasons.

He advises to apply weed killer during late April or early May unless extended rain is in the forecast. In that case it is better to apply it in early April.

After putting seeds in the ground, farmers should wait around four to six weeks before applying another round of weed killer.
