Thursday is the Great American Smokeout.

The annual event put on by the American Cancer Society encourages smokers nationwide to quit.

About 34 million American adults still smoke cigarettes, according to the American Cancer Society. And smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. Smoking causes about 1 in 5 deaths.

While the rates of cigarette smoking have declined from 42% in 1965 to 14% in 2019.  But, the American Cancer Society said the gains have been inconsistent.
