1996: The city gives a check for $763,418 to the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp. to pay creditors and advance the development of a downtown government office center project.
Capt. James Lewandowski, warden at the Mahoning County Justice Center, says a report issued by a county grand jury is well-intended but off the mark by criticizing the county for providing private rooms, television, phone privileges, three meals a day, and laundry. Lewandowski says those "amenities" are mandated. The grand jury foreman was Ray Kashmiry.
Peter J. Kontos was a 5-year-old boy on the Greek island of Chios when word came from his father that the family would be joining him in a place called Warren, Ohio. At 42, Kontos told the story before being sworn in as a judge of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
1981: Warren firefighters are attempting to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed the 153-year-old Smith House, a historic landmark on "Millionaire's Row."
State Rep. Thomas J. Carney, D-71 st, says he will seek the Democratic nomination for the Mahoning County commissioner seat being vacated by Thomas Barrett.
Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., CEO of the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp., attributes hard work and the opportunities available in America for the success that led to his being awarded Italy’s Order of Merit.
1971: Some 150 Youngstown area women band together to fight inflation as part of a national campaign named "Price Fighters -- Unite."
As he is sworn into a second term, Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter rebukes the federal and state governments for virtually ignoring the problems of American cities, paying only lip service to cities' pleas for aid.
1946: William Howard Price, 28, formerly of Youngstown is one of 12 people killed in the Christmas Eve crash of a Western Airlines plane in California.
Dr. E.E. Kirkwood, medical director of the Mahoning County Tuberculosis Sanatorium for 21 years, takes trustees to court to attempt to block his firing.
The Ohio Leather Co., Girard's largest industrial concern, has a net profit of $364,903 for the fiscal year, nearly doubling that of a year earlier.
