Drug overdose deaths on pace to reach record in Trumbull County
The opioid epidemic's deadly grip on the valley is on pace to beat record numbers in at least one county.
Trumbull County's coroner has confirmed 30 drug overdose deaths in 2022 from January through mid-May. A total of 21 additional suspected overdose death test results are pending.
The number is higher at the half-way point of the year than in recent years.
"If you look back at this time through the last five years, our numbers were never to the rate where they are now, even in 2017," Lauren Thorp said, assistant director of the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board.
The breakdown from toxicology results in Trumbull County show none of the overdoses were linked to heroin, instead fentanyl is the leader mixed with almost everything, including more cocaine.
Fentanyl mixed with cocaine accounted for 33-percent of the deaths this year. Deaths linked to cocaine solely in Trumbull and Mahoning counties are are rising, accounting for 7-percent in Trumbull in 2022 to date.
Thorp says the focus among countywide agencies is to get people the addiction treatment and mental health help that they need so they can learn coping skills.
Thrive Counseling off of Woodland St. NE in Warren celebrated a ribbon cutting and recent expansion on Thursday. It's goal is to get people the help they need after detox and inpatient addiction treatment.
"They follow a curriculum in the intensive outpatient program and kind of focus on what are coping skills," Andrea DeJacimo said, owner of Thrive Counseling.
"We do life skills if they've been using so long and they don't have the skills to function in daily life."
Thrive Counseling typically offers substance use counseling to individuals who have been through detox and inpatient treatment.
