1998: Lowellville Mayor John A. Olson says the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will build an earthen barrier at a firing range off Struthers Road in response to neighbors' complaints about noise.

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue says the new Cleveland Browns would come from the expansion of the league, not from the relocation of a franchise from another city.

Youngstown Bishop Thomas Tobin will celebrate the annual White Mass at St. Columba Cathedral for healthcare workers.   

1983: Willie J. Kirk, 20, is in guarded condition in a Warren Hospital after being shot twice in the head, execution style, police say. Two city men have been arrested. 

Mayor George Vukovich is going to Washington, D.C., with a wish list for federal assistance, including federal contracts for at least five companies in Youngstown. 

Sam Traficanti, manager of Mahoning County Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr.'s campaign, testifies at Traficant's bribery trial that a tape recording of Traficant talking to underworld figures was accurate. 

1973: Robert E. Williams is elected president of General Fireproofing Co. to replace John A. Saunders, who resigned. 

Mark McCandless, a junior at Ursuline High School, is elected lieutenant governor of Division 21, Ohio District or Key Club International.   

1948: A band of six gunmen clean out the Ritz Club, a gambling den in Columbus, systematically taking jewelry and cash from 40 patrons.  The haul was estimated at $40,000.

Mrs. Emma Debeljak, a 33-year-old mother of three and a native of Farrell, Pa., is reported to be sentenced to death in Yugoslavia, although the charge is unclear.
