COLUMBUS, Ohio - The State of Ohio is offering free Naloxone cabinets to colleges and universities to help save lives.

Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a medication used to reverse an overdose caused by an opioid like fentanyl or heroin. The medication blocks the effect of opioids on the brain and restores breathing.

The cabinets will be similar to the ones that hold an AED machine at schools.

Narcan cabinets are being offered through RecoveryOhio, a program created after Governor Mike DeWine took office.

House Bill 341, which was signed into law in 2020, expanded access to naloxone through a variety of distribution methods including emergency access cabinets.

The cabinets are available at no cost to each public university and college in Ohio.
