1998: Ohio wildlife officials say that the 1997 outbreak of 70 cases of rabies in the Mahoning Valley can be traced to a pack of 300 raccoons illegally transported from Florida to West Virginia 20 years earlier and released so that they could be hunted. 
 
William Divens 46, and his son, Daniel, 8, were killed in the crash of a 1952 Piper Pacer during takeoff at Beaver County Airport. Christine Divens, 36, and Megan, 11, were taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. The family was from Industry, Pa.
 
Elsie Hillman, a former member of the Republican National Committee who was an instrumental early supporter of Pa. Gov. Tom Ridge says he was relaxed his support for comprehensive women's health, apparently in an effort to gain support among the Republican Party's growing anti-abortion constituency.
 
1983: After seven hours of deliberation, a Trumbull County jury finds 18-year-old Randy Fellows guilty of murdering Niles Policeman John Utlak.  The jury will return to decide whether it should recommend the death penalty. 
 
At the trial of Youngstowner Peter Cascarelli, charged with conspiracy to kill Joseph M. DeRose Jr, a federal prosecutor says that Youngstown racketeer  Joseph "Little Joey" Naples so wanted DeRose dead that he once offered to "clean up the blood" himself. 
 
The Howland Board of Education votes to not renew the contracts of 23 teachers, 13 of them temporary replacements for teachers on leave and 10 whose positions are being eliminated in an economic move as enrollment drops from 4,200 to 3,950.
 
1973: Ethan Allen Inc., the maker of early American furniture, reaches a tentative agreement to buy Kenmar Manufacturing Co. in East Palestine.
 
Archie Nelson, 23, is charged with assault in the pistol-whipping of Youngstown Patrolman  David Bole, 47.  Nelson, who pleaded innocent, told investigating officers he had thrown Bole's revolver and handcuffs in McKelvey Lake. 
 
Judy Barrett, a junior at Youngstown State University, is the ROTC Military Ball queen.  
 
1948: Youngstown City Council passes an ordinance prohibiting smoking in retail stores. The ban does not apply to beauty salons, restaurants, or tobacco stores. Smoking will be permitted n restrooms, designated areas, and executive offices. 
 
Youngstown City Engineer James C. Ryan says city officials are studying a proposal to set a fee for garbage collection in the city. 
 
Youngstown is facing bankruptcy unless voters approve a 2.5-mill tax issue, warns city finance director J. Emerson Davis.
