AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio - People in the Mahoning Valley are optimistic about their chances to win the $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot Friday night.

The average person's odds to win are 1 in 303 million.

“I got my winning ticket,” Richard Smith of Austintown said.

“If you were going to try and list out all of those possible combinations selecting 5 numbers from 1 to 70 and then a sixth number from 1 to 25 there are 303 million of those,” Mark Glickman Harvard University, Senior Lecturer on Statistics said.

To play every possible combination and be sure you win the jackpot, at $2 a ticket, you would need to spend $606 million. But even if you had the money it would take a lot of time to print all the tickets.

“You might have to get a network of people helping you a little bit and when I say a little bit I mean a lot,” Glickman said.

“I pick one of my own numbers and then I do a quick pick,” Smith said.

Statistically, you have less of a chance to be the only jackpot winner if you pick a combination of numbers that show up in a pattern on the selection sheet or pick based on birthdays.

“They should probably go with the quick picks that are just randomly selected,” Glickman said.

If you're not going to get every combination of numbers possible- Glickman said you can never be sure you're affecting your chances of winning.

“It’s completely random, it's always going to be 1 out of 303 million,” he said.

The last time someone from Ohio won the Mega Millions jackpot was December of 2019 at $375 million.
