1998: Megan Herman of Sharon, a Pittsburgh native, is the first woman sworn in as a member of the Sharon Police Department. Mayor Bob Prices says only one other woman ever applied and was offered a patrol job, but she wanted to be a detective.
Eastwood Village Apartments on Youngstown's East Side, previously known as McGuffey Terrace, are open to tenants after being bought and rehabilitated by Caritas Communities, a member corporation of Catholic Charities Housing Opportunities and Humility of Mary Housing Inc.
Seventy-five pianos are up for sale at Stambaugh Auditorium, with proceeds of the sale benefiting the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University.
1983: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' refusal to go along with the plan for a hydroelectric power plant at the Shenango River Dam at Grove City, Pa., could doom the $4.9 million project.
Pamela Helean Rigas, 22, of Canfield, is the fourth runner-up in the Miss America Pageant, which was won by Vanessa Williams of New York, the first black woman to wear the Miss America crown.
Joseph Bucheit & Sons is awarded the general contract for building the new clubhouse at the Tippecanoe Country Club, which will replace one destroyed by fire in March.
1973: Youngstown City Council prepares a resolution that would shift ownership and operation of Mill Creek Park from a board of commissioners to the city of Youngstown.
The 88-year-old Old Furnace Road Bridge in Mill Creek Park is closed to traffic in preparation for razing and replacing it with a new $400,000 span.
1948: Joe Kocur, 53, is shot three times as he confronts three bandits at his bar, Joe's Tavern, 104 N. Meridian. He is in fair condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
