Ceremony honors Valley marines killed in 1983 Beirut barracks bombings
The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission and the Marine Corps League Detachment 494 in Austintown remembered the servicemen and women who lost their lives during a bombing in Lebanon 40 years ago with a ceremony at the Peace Keepers Memorial in Struthers Saturday.
Three local marines were killed in the attack: Cpl. Edward A. Johnston, 22, of Struthers, LCpl Stanley J. Sliwinski, 20, of Niles and Sgt. James E. McDonough, 21, of New Castle.
The Struthers Peace Keepers Memorial lists the names of the three local marines and 11 others from Ohio who were killed in the attack.
The October 23, 1983, attack on the U.S. Marines Corps barracks in Beruit happened during the Lebanese Civil War and claimed the lives of 241 American service members.
According to the Arlington National Cemetery's website, two truck bombs were detonated by suicide bombers, hitting buildings where U.S. and French military members were housed. A total of 299 service members were killed - 241 American and 58 French. Six civilians also perished in the attack.
Arlington National Cemetery says the attack was the deadliest single-day attack against U.S. Marines since the 1945 battle over Iwo Jima during World War II.
