A Boardman doctor and chocolatier has opened up his very first retail location in his hometown on Friday.

Dr. Nick Proia is a local pulmonologist who founded Brix Chocolates in 2008 after discovering the harmonious pairing of heart-healthy dark chocolate with wine during monthly gatherings with his colleagues.

Dr. Proia sells his chocolate to folks across the U.S. and Europe through his online store and through major retailers. Now, folks here in the Valley have a place to buy all of Brix's products in one place.

Brix Chocolates opened up its first retail location at 7396 Market Street in Boardman to cater to the community with its locally-produced wine-pairing chocolates.

"Both wine and chocolate contain similar compounds, tannins and flavonols, which work to relax blood vessels, lower blood pressure and improve lipid profiles," Dr. Proia said.

Brix Chocolates come in four different flavors: Milk, Smooth Dark, Extra Dark and Medium Dark, with each one designed specifically to pair with different varieties of wine.

Brix is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
