21 WFMJ archives / March 8, 1970 | The Pewter Room, one of three Strouss department store restaurants, was all new and ready to open 54 years ago.  The restaurant could seat 130 on the fourth floor of the downtown store and could be entered through the department store or through the adjacent Wick Building.

1999: Warren City Council passes a resolution opposing a bill introduced by state Sen. Richard Schafrath, R-Mansfield, that would ban laws requiring public employees to live in the jurisdictions in which they are employed. Warren requires all employees hired since 1991 to live within the city.

The makers of the Clark Bar, a confection that gained success as a 5-cent bar sent to American troops during World War I, filed for bankruptcy. About 100 people are employed by the company in Pittsburgh. 

An outbreak of synura, a cold-water algae, has caused an unusually strong odor and taste in water distributed by the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District. Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey accuses the MVSD of not being aggressive enough in addressing the problem. 

1984: Affidavits in U.S. District Court in Cleveland allege that two of eight men charged after a shipment of 22 pounds of cocaine from Miami was intercepted and plotted to kill Mahoning Valley crime figures Charles Carabbia and James "Dankers" Petrella. The affidavits say Carabbia had demanded a cut of the local cocaine action and had threatened to use his relationship with Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr. against the cocaine ring. 

Bill Sause, president of Fordees Products in Leetonia, purchases the former Salem Industries Inc. complex on Route 9 on a bid of $367,390, the lowest that would have been accepted at the sheriff's sale. Machinery and equipment were sold separately. 

Ashtabula County officials charge a Williamsfield couple, Mark and Karen Fresh, with truancy for teaching their 6-year-old son at home. The couple says the public school environment is contrary to their Christian beliefs. 

1974: Two of the five East High students involved in the abuse of a 23-year-old female teacher are sentenced to permanent terms at the Ohio Youth Commission. Both are 16 years old. 

Chanting "streak power," some 400 Youngstown State University students cheer as three ski-masked classmates streak from Kilcawley Hall around the amphitheater area. 

Ted Bell, the Cardinal Mooney football player rated by top college recruiters as the nation's No. 1 scholastic back, is enrolling at Michigan State. 

1949: About 50 dealers, stickmen, slot machine attendants, and bingo workers at the Jungle Inn get a surprise in their pay envelopes: a 20 percent cut. Management's response to those who complain: take it or leave it. 

Charles E. Carolyne, a veteran Youngstown jeweler, buys the C.P. Appel Jewelry Co. at 16 S. Phelps St.

Two children are hurt, one seriously, when a dynamite cap explodes in the fifth-grade classroom at Greenford School.
