Just months before fundraising efforts begin for a new athletic complex that would stand behind the historic South High School, school officials at Valley Christian unveiled plans for the $10 million project Thursday afternoon.

Among the alumni, 1981 graduate Ron Torbert who will be entering his 15th year as a referee in the NFL. The Super Bowl LVI facilitator advocated for the complex, although the fieldhouse behind the stadium would have to come down.

"Knowing it's coming down to make room for something else, something grander--I don't think any South High Alumni are going to be sad about that.", Torbert explained.

Mike Pecchia, president at Valley Christian says it will cost around 10 million dollars to complete both phases of the project, which is expected to finished in August of 2026--but sticking to that timeline depends on a number of factors including fundraising and the city, which owns the land and the fieldhouse behind the old high school.

"We're still waiting, the city is still working on some things so we're kind of being loose on the timeline...a lot of it is fundraising and how quickly that happens.", Pecchia added.

First ward councilman Julius Oliver believes alumni will buy into the project and contributions from potential investors could bring it to fruition and enhance the Market Street corridor.

"Boys and girls club, Jubilee project, CCA everything that's going on it will just be an expansion of things for greater things coming through that corridor.", said Oliver, who believes this would be something for the youth and adults in the neighborhood to look forward too.
