Authorities have identified the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

According to the Associated Press, the FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park as the suspected gunman behind the assassination attempt.  The Secret Service said it killed the suspected shooter, who attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue.

One spectator was killed and two were critically injured.  Trump said in a social media post that a bullet "pierced the upper part" of his right ear before secret service agents whisked him off stage.

Leaders from across both aisles are condemning the attack and sending thoughts and prayers to the former President.
