The Mahoning County Veteran's Service Commission just got a massive boost in financial support to help build a proposed Veteran's Center in Youngstown.

Mahoning Commissioners have approved $4,140,000 to go toward renovating a 23,000-square-foot building next to the Carl Nunziato Veterans Administration Building on Belmont Avenue.

"We thought it was a great idea to make a veteran's campus there," said Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti. "It's going to be more accessible and offer more rooms for veterans and their counselors."

Construction is expected to begin in phases in the coming months and the Veterans will be able to move into their new headquarters in the next calendar year.

Phase 1 includes a secure client intake center, conference rooms, office space for one-on-one support services, an event hall, and a garage for medical shuttles.

Commissioners say they have been working with the Veterans Service Commission and the Western Reserve Port Authority for over a year trying to secure the right location and develop the best plan to serve the Veterans.

Part of the center is going to be paid for through the newly enacted state budget, which is giving the project $650,000.

The center is part of a larger effort to revitalize the Belmont corridor.
